Exhibitions in January and March of 2006 will showcase selected works from a three-year artists-in-schools programme; TRADING PLACES/CR.E.A.T.E. managed by Kids’ Own, a child-centred arts organisation.

Kids’ Own have the pleasure in inviting you to the opening reception of THE LINEN TRAIL.
An exhibition of work from the TRADING PLACES/CR.E.A.T.E project sited in three venues in Lisburn; The Irish Linen Centre and Lisburn Museum, Art Act Gallery, Island Arts Centre.

About the Project

This project placed eleven artists in ten primary schools in Cavan, Sligo, Leitrim, Armagh and Belfast. Children, teachers and artists collaborated through a series of residencies, training sessions and creative exchanges resulting in the creation of innovative work.

Through the introduction of contemporary arts practices, classrooms were transformed into studios. Artists, children and teachers were continually challenged to interrogate their ideas, negotiate the creation of meaning, and strive for authentic collaboration. Teachers witnessed their students working with great motivation and inspiration as they explored questions about their own identity, the world and their place in it.

This uniquely flexible project brought each artist’s working process to the core of his or her collaboration. At this core, the boundaries were blurred between their studio work and their collaborations in the classroom. For many artists this was a transformative experience. You can see the resulting work at the exhibitions, and track the transformation online through artists’ journals.

Through these exhibitions and the publication of a book ‘Beneath the Surface’, Kids’ Own wishes to change perceptions about the quality and relevance of artwork done in educational settings.
