dark mill

After processing ideas and images over the next few days, I made another trip to the mill on 16th Dec, to record further images and discuss with Nicola on our next day together.

What met me at the mill room was this stunning natural light show! Outside was strong morning sunlight - it beamed in through the gaps in the boarding put up over the windows in the wet spinning room. The room was quite dark and as the sun moved during the morning, I noticed that the character of the room changed and the lines drawn on the floor shifted. These were recorded with a stills camera. A 'drawing was made through the pillars using plain flour, and during the morning the sunlight lines met the flour lines... which got me thinking that these set (fixed) lines of drawn material on the floor could be used to create a moving drawing as the lines of sunlight moved either with the movement of the sun or because they fade in and out.

I also recorded the movement of dust particles with a video camera, as the flour made such a mess everywhere!

When Nicola and I met next, we discussed these possibilities and the thoughts that she had been working through with regard to movement in the space and we agree to meet next at the mill to play........
